I listen to music in a primal way - I'm only interested in how it makes me feel. THE ROTTEN MILE by Gallon Drunk (released 2008) is my current favourite album because it makes me feel how I want to feel. I often listen to it when I drive, and get so pumped that I feel like smashing my car up! The two-headed monster of bass and drums feels like a truck coming out of the speakers, the groove is so solid throughout but still soulful.
"Night Panic Bossa" has such a great vibe, and "Put A Bolt In The Door" with the sleazy guitars and screaming saxophone totally blows me away. I've been playing my own version of it on the last tour I did. I love the relentless chug and sheer physicality of "Down At The Harbour". The icing on the cake is the song which closes the album - it has the ability to transform the space around you and put you in a bubble, and the brushed snare makes my heart melt. I think this record has the same essence as when they play live.
Most records I listen to are by people who are dead and I'm constantly frustrated by a lack of soul in most modern music. Having contemporary peers that are playing and releasing records like this gives me hope.
Gemma Ray hat nach ihrem vielgelobten Debüt THE LEADER gerade ihr zweites Album LIGHTS OUT ZOLTAR! veröffentlicht.
