John Davis is known to some as the other guy in The Folk Implosion (a band he started with Lou Barlow of Sebadoh.) I much prefer his solo work and especially the album LEAVE HOME which I’ve had since I was 14 years old. John Davis plays all the instruments here and it was recorded at home. The album is a musical genre unto itself – as intimate as humanly possible, half- improvised, intelligent, and equal parts disturbing and heart- warming. Like Daniel Johnston he is able to not be self-concious while in front of his tape-recorder. Unlike Daniel Johnston his music is not particularly childlike or naive. I had the opportunity to meet him once and he expressed that he was a fan of The Incredible String Band and Syd Barrett. Certainly Skip Spence’s OAR might be a comparison. Similar to Syd Barrett, John Davis has fallen completely off the map and has not issued a record or even granted an interview in over ten years. I heard it rumored that he was working as a librarian.
