My favourite LP is The Idiot by Iggy Pop. For a long time Ege Bamyasi by Can was number one but over the last few years I’ve listened to the Idiot more.

I first heard it as a teenager on one side of a cassette. The other side taken up with Lust for Life, which I preferred initially, but then „The Idiot“ crept up on me. It sounds more electronic than „Lust for Life“, and it sounds more menacing. I love the Stooges song „Dirt“, and I think Iggy revisits his singing style from that song on this record. He’s crooning all over it. Baby and Dum Dum Boys are probably my favourite songs on the record. „Baby“ has an futuristic electronic cabaret feel to it and „Dum Dum Boys“ tells the story of the Stooges. I love the line ‚i was most impressed, no one else was impressed, no, not at all‘. There are lots of stories about Iggy’s ability to come up with lyrics spontaneously in front of the mic. I think this gives the record an unpredictability which makes me jealous. I think the combination of Iggy and David Bowie was perfect. If you compare it to say the first side of Low, which is a record I adore also, it’s interesting to compare Iggy’s slightly unhinged mischievous vocal to Bowie’s more detached and isolated one. Maybe those characteristics defined both of them around the mid to late seventies.

I really like the instrumentation used, with the Arp Solina being quite prominent. We used it on our record Ventriloquizzing a lot. It’s the greatest synth sound I’ve ever heard. The LP is so full of interesting elements. The drum machine on Nightclubbing, the synth sounding guitar on Mass Production and the sax melody on Tiny Girls are just three things that jump out. And Iggy’s vocals on China Girl, when they distort, sound incredible.
